In the past two hundred and fifty years, Popayá n has been shaken by two intense short epicentral distance earthquakes; in 1736 and in 1983. There are reasons to believe dthe magnitude or both earthquakes were similar; for the last one the instrumental magnitude was 5.5. Through a cooperative program between INGEOMINAS as the Colombian general coordinator and the European Economic Community through BRGM from France and ADK/KS from Greece, it was possible to establish at least tree zones with different site response. A design spectrum was found for each zone (AU). / POPAYAN / CAUCA
