Using microzonation methods and techniques, systematically developed in Peru since 1970, and the experience of applying them to urban planning, a project was started in january 1989. The main objetive is to incorporate disaster mitigation measures in the social economic development planning of the new Grau region. This model study will be used for the same purpose in the other 11 new regions, to have Peru's "National Plan for Disaster Prevention Mitigation" the country's main project for the IDNDR. At present 11 research projects are in progress in the Grau region. The areas being investigated were priorized. Close coordination is being effected with the politicians planners of the Grau region to insert the disaster mitigation inputs in the right place of the documents and actions at the right time, as not to spoil this unique opportunity (AU).
